Body and back acne can be embarrassing in situations where we have to or want to take our clothes off. Here you will find a few very useful tips for back acne treatment. So, just what are the causes of back and body acne? Acne Vulgares is the same condition as normal facial acne and is the result of blocked sebaceous glands. The majority of these glands are located in the areas of the upper back and chest which is why the acne would most likely start off in these regions. It could also start on the neck and lower back but this is rare. Mostly, facial acne will start in the puberty when an increased sebum production causes an oily T-zone. Later on as the acne gets worse, it can appear on the body. Why is back or body acne more common in women? Increasing cases of body acne can be seen in women going into their fifties and this has to do with the fluctuation of the hormone levels. Premenstrual breakouts are common as women go into their pregnancy. this is when the progesterone level is increased which in turn increases the sebum production. Pregnancy and coming on and off contraception can also cause hormone fluctuation. The use of to much make-up can also clog the pores and trigger off 'Acne Cosmetica'. Men tend to suffer from acne in their teens but unless they are prone to genetic acne, this usually clears up in the early teens to early twenties. If acne does persist by men, this is usually down to beard growth, sweating and friction caused by clothes. Can there be other causes? The experts estimate that 10 to 15 per cent from all female back and body acne is due to polysystic ovary syndrom (PCOS). This is characterised by the presence of benign cysts on the ovaries and abnormal responsiveness to male hormones.Symptoms include increased hair growth on the face and body, weight gain and acne. If you have these symptoms, ask your doctor for a referral to a dermatologist or gynaecologist. Can stress play a role? Stress triggers the production of hormones from from the adrenal glands, some of which have that androgen-like, acne-causing effect. This is the reason why some men continue to suffer and some women seem to always have acne. After washing my back still feels greasy. Never over cleanse by scrubbing or to harsh and rough body wash. This will only increase the turnover of the skin cells, which in turn can cause blockages in the sebaceous ducts, just making the acne worse. This is referred to as 'acne mechanica' or frictional acne, and it is also caused by tight clothes that do not allow your skin to breath. Use a gentle facial wash with an anti bacterial action. Salicylic Acid is a good ingredient to keep an eye out for. Can a doctor help at all? Yes they can. The first thing a doctor will advise is a topical antibiotic such as Erythromycin or Clindamycin. An alternative to these would be a group of topical treatments called retinoids (vitamin A-related agents). These can be very drying and start to irritate so it is advisable to use these very thinly. What about oral antibiotics? If you want to take oral antibiotics, you must take them for at least sixty days, even if the acne clears during this time or the acne could return. They work on acne as a anti-inflammatory. For women, a popular and effective alternative for oral antibiotics is the Pill. In very severe cases, a course of the oral retinoid, Roaccutane is a very effective treatment. This can only be prescribed by a dermatologist. There are side effects to this medicine such as dry skin, hair loss and brittle nails. These side effects can be avoided if the initial dose given is very low at the beginning and gradually increased. By pregnancy Roaccutane as well as oral antibiotics, benzyoyl peroxide and retinoids must be avoided. Can sunbeds help? Sunlight can help some peoples acne and this is quite simply because the UV light kills of acne bacteria and speeds up the skin cell turnover. Others find that it makes the symptoms worse and some people are obviously very concerned about skin cancer. No one should subject themselves to excessive sun over long periods without protection and the so called sun beds are a definite no no. If however, you are one of those people that know the sun helps your acne, by all means use this natural source of healing. Do not expose the affected parts for longer than fifteen to twenty minutes and if possible in the morning. The rest of the time the affected areas should remain covered with sun-protective clothing or use a SPF 15 with UVA protection. Choose sun protection that is not greasy, to thick or waterproof. They will only clog the skin and make the acne worse.
