Still on the saga of what makes a web designer good, one requirement is for a designer to mind the little details that can at least give comfort for some users with disabilities. Well, for one if you're a designer, you have to think that your users don't have uniform browser features, nor will they set up the same defaults. Even I who have complete limbs and quite clear eyesight get frustrated for some sites that will require me to switch from one browser to another, just to access it. Here are some things that a visually impaired user usually does. He tends to select larger fonts or may turn off backgrounds, would tend to look for fewer colors, and override some fonts. A good web designer who has great foresight can figure out what settings most users are using including those of the visually impaired. This is applicable as well for the operating systems. A kick-ass designer can come up with a web site that can run on any operating system, be that Windows or Mac. It may not be that perfect, but a competent designer should be able to accommodate at least 95 percent of users' needs. Of course, when you want to figure out which operating systems are compatible with the site, Mr. Designer must test the site on common operating systems. Well, just to give an overview on popular operating systems, Windows XP garnered the first rank for having 81% of the market share. Second is Windows 2000 which has 8%. Windows 98 comes third with 8 % and Mac which has 3%. I don't know if there's new information about this, but I don't think XP is going to give way for Vista that sooner. Vista seems to be having a lot of problems these days. Anyway, I think I made my point here. When you want to make it big in the world of designing, you have to think of what benefits most of your users.
