You Want To Be Around To Meet Your Grandchildren Don't You?

By: Gen Wright

To many people the very idea of having firm and toned muscles make them cringe. Yet whether you like them or not they are essential to each of us to even exist. Every single movement we make from breathing to walking from sleeping to driving - involves our muscles. They enable us to stand upright and hold the bones of our skeleton together and our insides in.

Muscles are unique and have the ability to contract and relax, produce power and force. They are highly active tissue, meaning that the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism (your body's engine). This is a good thing as it means you will be burning more calories both at rest and during physical activity. This enables you to eat more food without gaining weight or to use the extra calorie burn to lose weight.

We often don't give the health of our muscles a single thought as they are largely unseen and work away in the background like faithful servants. But we should think about them as after the age of thirty they start to shrink and shrivel unless we look after them. Each year we will lose 300-500 grams of this precious tissue up to age 50 then the rate of the loss doubles.

The end result is disability and loss of independence as we end up not even being strong enough to take care of ourselves on a daily basis. This means someone else has to and we risk the very real possibility of becoming a burden to family, friends, society and ultimately our world.

Here are 5 benefits that our friends our muscles give us if we keep them strong with a proper exercise program that is made up mostly of strength training exercise:

1) Strong muscles make life easier – With stronger muscles every single thing we do each day is easier and less tiring. We can accomplish more, are more productive and have energy left over to enjoy our favorite leisure activities.

2) Strong muscles mean stronger bones – Our muscles are attached to our bones so when we strengthen our muscles stress is placed on the bones making them stronger and denser. This means a reduced risk of the crippling condition osteoporosis.

3) Strong muscles help us stay lean – Every extra pound of muscle we create we will burn 50-75 calories per day. So, 3lbs. of muscle = 150-225 calories per day. This greater calorie burning reduces the risk of becoming overweight which is linked to the onset of disease especially the 'big three' heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

4) Stronger muscles greater disease protection – Muscle tissue is the fuel depots of the immune system where the amino acid glutamine and protein is stored. This fuel produces new antibodies and white blood cells to fight off infections or find and destroy cancer cells. More muscle tissue means a stronger immune system which is the body's armor and defense system.

5) Keeping your muscles strong slows down the aging process - Unused (unchallenged) muscle tissue shrinks with each decade sucking the life force from you like some dwindling old engine that has lost its power. You will become less and less active and it is no fun to move much when everything hurts.

Seek the help of a fitness professional to get you started on your strength training program if you are new to exercise. Don't let inactivity take your life from you. You must surely want to be around to get to know your grandchildren but first you have to be around to even get to meet them don't you?
