Summer Gardens and Cooking with Essential Oils
By :
Norah Charles
Now that summer is officially here, our home gardens are in their heyday. Spring's greens have already sprouted and given us the first gifts of the season, like bitter dandelion leaves, soft lettuces and nutrient-rich spinach. Now it's peas and squash, strawberries and raspberries. Last season you risked it and planted watermelon (and oh, what a harvest you had!). This summer you're branching out to cooking herbs and thinking of buying a backyard composting bin for all of your fertile scraps. No matter what you're growing in your garden or on your deck, the abundance of summer makes us want to eat healthy and pay attention to the earth, the real root of our nourishment.
Most of the year, we get our fruits and veggies from farms that are states, and sometimes even continents, away from home. Each summer, however, we put on our gloves, pull out the tools and accept the call of the home garden. The fruits of this fulfilling labor let us create dazzling, healthy meals. As anyone who's ever harvested a basket of summer fruits and veggies from their own garden can attest, these simple ingredients produce the most extraordinary meals. If, however, your summer produce needs an added splash, you can cull a wide range of flavors from a surprising source: your essential oil repertoire.
When buying aromatic oils, you should always strive to use medicinal-grade oils. These oils come from huge amounts of plant material, so it's wise to use high-quality oils from reliable sources. Of course we already consider this when we buy aromatherapy products for use on the skin. However, committing to therapeutic-grade oils has a secret plus: you can use these oils in food as well. If you've never seen your aromatherapy collection this way, just remember that smell has more control over our sense of flavor than even our taste buds! Keeping that little fact in focus, here are some hassle-free ways to use essential oils in your summer cuisine.
First and foremost, let's address the issue of food safety. Essential oils are, obviously, plant-derived substances. While you may not want to eat a hunk of frankincense resin straight from the tree, frankincense is still a naturally occurring substance. It is not poisonous in small quantities, but it may make you want to brush your teeth immediately. Many essential oils are expressly dangerous for internal consumption, such as wintergreen and birch, but other oils can be used in small quantities for internal health as well as for cooking. In fact, the FDA has qualified many of the common essential oils as GRAS, Generally Recognized as Safe, substances. This means that, although they are not categorized as food additives, they can be consumed without apparent side-effects. When considering which oils to cook with, this is a good rule of thumb: essential oils of citruses, spices and other commonly-eaten foods are probably going to make excellent additions to your cuisine. Just be cautious when using essential oils that are known to irritate mucous membranes, such as cinnamon, oregano and peppermint.
How can essential oils improve your summer harvest? Let's first consider one of the gifts of the Mediterranean region: the citruses. Oils like grapefruit and lemon blend beautifully with olive oil for simple, tangy dressings. All it takes is one drop of oil per tablespoon of oil, and your salad will be transformed. Love guacamole? Try a few drops of lime oil mixed with ripe avocado and serve it with corn chips or jicama slices. Still munching on this spring's spinach? Mandarin orange essential oil, which smells heavenly, is refreshing drizzled on greens. How about beverages? Oils add dimension to juices and fizzy waters, too. By mixing grapefruit, mandarin and lime in equal parts, seltzer water is transformed into a healthy citrus soda without the sugar found in commercial brands. As with all aromatic oils, though, don't overdo it. Thankfully, a little bit of oil goes a long way.
Ever thought about those essential oils derived from the bouquet of cooking herbs you've planted in your garden? Oregano, ginger, thyme, marjoram, bay and basil are ideal for cooking. If you love basil (and most of us do!) add a few drops of oil to a simple pasta of red pepper, olives and red onion, and your taste buds will dance. Or maybe you're a stir fry fanatic. Ginger oil, which is extremely powerful, adds kick to Asian food and is great for aiding digestion, too. Ever considered trying coffee with cardamom? A single drop of cardamom turns coffee into a feast for the senses. Try this blend iced on hot afternoons for a refreshing treat or even after meals. When cooking with these oils, though, remember that an excess of oil could potentially make your food inedible because they are so strong. Go easy, and consider tossing the oils in right at the end of cooking so they don't evaporate prior to mealtime.
Not surprisingly, essential oils also enhance desserts. Two of the most well-loved dessert flavorings come as essential oils: vanilla bean and cacao. The aromatic oils, however, do not come laden with sugar, nor are they soaking in alcohol, the process used to create extracts. If you find yourself craving a sweet vanilla, try blending your essential oil with honey instead of sugar and see if your craving is curbed. The same can be said for cacao. This bitter, dark essential oil is not a candy bar, but it signals the brain the same way chocolate does. A decadent way of indulging your sweet tooth without jeopardizing your diet is to drip two drops of cacao or vanilla into yogurt and eat like ice cream.
Summer food has a way of reminding us of life's simple pleasures. From a basic family barbeque to a neighborhood feast, the fruits of the season enable us to take care of ourselves while taking care of the earth, too. Essential oils bring new dimension and ease to already simple fare, and often the addition of an oil adds nuance to a dish without the need for an extra trip to the grocery. So remember: if you find yourself the sudden hostess of an impromptu summer get-together and you're down to soy milk, just toss water, ice and essential oil of lime in a glass and call it a spritzer. This is summer, after all!
How Do You Do A Chemical Soil Test?
By :
Helen Disler
Chemical analysis is the most common method used to assess the nutrient content (and nutrient needs) of soil. An accurate determination of nutrient need is possible if two conditions are satisfied: first, that the soil sample is truly representative of the field to be analysed; and, second, that the chemical testing method has been calibrated through enough research to the crops and soils in the area.
The farmer may choose to take soil samples either by soil type or on a grid basis.
Soil-type sampling involves making a diagram of the field by soil type and obtaining a composite sample of each type. The composite sample may consist of 10 to 15 individual cores of each type which are thoroughly mixed together. From this mix, about 1 pint (0.5L) or 1 pound (0.4kg) is submitted to the lab for testing. This process is done for each soil type present in the field.
Grid sampling involves dividing the area into squares of 1.2 to 2.0 ha (3-5 acres) and taking from each square a composite sample consisting of 8 core samples thoroughly mixed together. Contamination of samples should be avoided.
The lab may also want historical information about the field, such as cropping history for two years or more, previous applications of fertiliser or manure, yield levels, etc. It is advisable to have the samples analysed by a reputable lab whose technicians are well-acquainted with the soils and crops in the farm's locality.
The information generated from the chemical tests gives an indication of the soil quality in the field.
Soil organic matter (SOM). Labs use chemical or thermal oxidation of the total soil to determine SOM. Since the carbon content of SOM is typically around 58-60%, a factor of 1.7-1.72 is used to convert soil organic carbon content into SOM. An organic carbon content value of 0.8%, for example, translates into an organic matter content of 0.8% x 1.7 = 1.36%. Larger values of SOM are desirable because SOM enhances water retention as well as nutrient retention properties of soil, making these available to plants. The lab will have to indicate an optimal SOM value for your area. SOM values that decline over time indicate deterioration in quality.
Soil reaction (pH). The soil reaction or pH value, measured from soil slurry, is dependent on the type and quantities of organic and inorganic materials. However, environmental and management action also affect pH. Excessive nitrogen fertilisation makes soil acidic, whilst poor management of irrigation can induce alkalinity in soil. A soil pH analysis gives data about active acidity (or the hydrogen ion H+ in solution); in contrast, a test for lime requirement evaluates the reserve acidity (or the buffering ability) and provides an accurate guidance on how much lime to apply to a particular field.
Nutrient Availability. Soils can be analysed for virtually all nutrients but within limits. The more routine chemical tests are for phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and manganese -- all of which significantly influence plant growth. There are specific tests tailored to specific soil types and crops. A recommended test will generate data expressed in units of nutrient content per hectare (e.g. kg/ha), and these values will be compared with an appropriate scale defined by local technicians.
Chemical soil testing may have the most accurate results in soil testing because they entail precise measurements of nutrients detected in the soil. Selection of the method is a decision made by the lab scientists, depending on the facilities available to them. The farmer's role is to submit the most representative, contamination-free samples of the soil in their fields.

Wooden garden furniture might be a really smart buy to add to your landscape. There is a vast selection of furniture styles that you can select from. There is an option to put up planters and seating. There is a wide selection of wooden garden furniture providers to choose from.
You will need to start first with a provider that offers a wide selection of furniture that you can choose from. A dependable, durable, timer should be included in their product. For example, a provider in UK utilizes Iroko timber which could be resistant to many factors that could destroy wood in a short time.
While nothing is immune to theft including your wooden garden furniture, look for galvanized or stainless steel that can help prevent this unfortunate incident. That can give you reassurance so you won't be concerned about your outdoor furnishings in the future.
Providers who have an ecological policy may appeal to the environmentally conscious. One provider's policy requires that timber is obtained only from countries with sustainable ecological plans. This information would be good for those who may be concerned that when they buy wooden garden furniture, they could compromise the environment. Clearly, this, must not be the point with some givers. Before you buy wooden garden furniture, make sure you inquire about this.
You should search for providers who emphasize customer satisfaction also. We also will offer you a guarantee of full replacement if need be. There are also providers who can work towards giving the customers the specifications they request for their order. This is going too encourage you to love your acquisition much more because it would be unique and be designed just for you.
You should ask if the provider allows customers to inspect the products. Make sure that the product you buy has a good guarantee that you can return if not happy or get a replacement if it is damaged in any way.
For price listings, you should always be sure to look at what information is available on the internet first. You can scope out different models and relative prices from home this way. This is a way that will save you a bunch of time and money. If you find that you are drawn to garden furniture made of wood, look around to friends and neighbors and ask around as to the manufacturers of such. Costing information can be received along with several decent referrals.
Be sure and remember that wooden garden furniture actually may be quite costly, especially if made from quality materials that will last. Safeguard yourself and make sure that you make a purchase that will last for years to come.

5 Questions About Organic Gardening
By :
John Black
1. What is natural farming? Natural gardening is more of a viewpoint than a form of gardening. It is a group whereby its associates cultivate foliages without making use of anything man-made. They don't use synthetic composts. They don't utilize synthetic pesticides. They don't use artificial develoment enhancers. For them, everything should be natural - organic if you will - which is the means that gardening should be.
2. How do natural gardening enthusiasts grow their crops? Organic gardening encourages plant growing techniques similar to those of conservative gardening, take away the usage of inorganic components. Plants are grown with the help of natural soil-enriching materials like manure, fish, seaweed fertilizers and bone meal. Vermins are restricted through natural pest-purging means, like drawing useful insects and using mulches that are revolting for the abovementioned insects.
3. How do natural gardening enthusiasts control the invasion of unwanted pests? Organic gardening enthusiastsprimarily rely on drawing beneficial creatures to monitor the increase of damaging creatures. Praying mantises, lovely ladybugs, spiders, and the likes are "drawn" to the garden. Additionally, organic gardening fanatics likewise grow plants which stop the increase of these creatures, such as cabbages, dills, tomatoes, chives, roses, corns and beans. These may not be the primary crops, but they are still raised by the side to control pest invasion.
4. How do organic gardening enthusiasts restrict an outbreak of disease in their growing crops? Many solutions can be used to prevent the progression of diseases, fungal or otherwise. Regularly giving an adequate amount of moisture, for example, is sufficient to eliminate the growth of fungus. Rotating annual crops is a great way to ensure that no leftover diseases persist throughout the years. Supplying enough space in between plants and trimming them frequently can ensure the impossibility of an occurence.
5. What type of natural fertilizers do natural gardening enthusiasts utilize? This isn't really a dilemma for natural gardening enthusiasts, as many garden stores today sell natural fertilizers. Brands such as Vegetables Alive and Sea Rich are just some of the famous products commonly obtainable for people who wish toengage in organic gardening.
